In this chapter it describes all the struggles the west went through and the economic downfall in the Great Depression. The 20th century was a time of crisis for the wet because a lot of problems happened and a lot of things went wrong during this time period. The economy and the fall of governments challenged the core values that defined "The West". During the times of world war 1 and world war 2 the US learned that systems of alliances can be dangerous, improved tools of killing, and established organizations of global cooperation. The Holocaust was actually many small actions done by various people to kill the jews. In this chapter, it talks about the expansion of the western world to the east and why the west didn't have an impact on the Chinese. The main reason why the west had little impact on the Chinese was because the Chinese thought they were doing well without help from the western societies. China did not have a industrial revolution and many of the citizens still lived a very simple "peasant" lifestyle. The Chinese population was also growing and is now china is the most populated country.  This chapter also talks about the opium wars going on between the west and the east. The West was selling opium to the east and the Chinese community were embarrassed that they couldn't control the trade of opium.
Another society talked about in thus chapter is the Ottoman empire or better known as Turkey. The Ottoman empire didn't feel the need to be influenced by the Europeans yet European influence had taken over many nearby colonies. The Ottoman empire had "defensive modernization". They incorporated new secular policies of liberalism and this looked like a sell out to the west.
